The global ocean observing system (Argo, altimetry, etc.) provides a wealth of information about ocean processes interacting over a wide range of spatio-temporal scales. It not only allows us to monitor climate variability and change but also constrains turbulent mixing rates, integrated transports, and other seldomly observed quantities. This presentation focuses on roles played by diabatic and adiabatic processes in the Southern Ocean, North Atlantic, and tropical Pacific as estimated in ECCO . An overview of the ECCO version 4 framework and new-generation products will be provided with examples of user-friendly applications that involve experimenting with the computationally inexpensive global ocean model.
