Abstract
How can Instagram posts or Tweets help verify or debunk claims, even when those claims come from the Russian president? Eliot Higgins (Bellingcat, Kings College London) and Maksymilian Czuperski (Atlantic Council) will be presenting on the open source intelligence tools and techniques increasingly used by citizen journalists; they will detail the digital forensics used in their recent publication, “Hiding in Plain Sight”, which exposes Russia’s involvement in Ukraine.
This event will also include a report launch on the landscape of social media verification, examining the practices of NGOs, media companies, academic projects, and governments in using social media to monitor and verify claims, especially in the context of human rights. This report was written as part of The Whistle project (www.thewhistle.org), a digital human rights reporting platform in development at Sociology/CGHR.
