The Cauchy problem for strictly hyperbolic 1D conservation and dissipative balance laws is well posed for initial data with small bounded variation. Starting from works by Ambrosio-De Lellis and Robyr, we discuss the SBV regularity, which means that the distributional derivative of the solution is a measure consisting only of a jump part and of an absolutely continuous part.
