His research is focused on reducing scrap metal in the automotive industry. David graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2022 with an MEng and spent one year working at a church before re-joining the department. He is just beginning the second year of his PhD. Abstract Car parts are often made from sheet metal using deep drawing. This is a reliable and efficient process, but it has scrap rates of close to 50%. Over the past few years, the Use Less Group has been developing a less wasteful process called Folding-Shearing. This talk explains the Folding-Shearing process and recent developments, including a method to extend the process to a new class of geometries.
