Sheet metal processing: increasing scope while reducing scrap

David is a PhD student in the Use Less Group. His research is focused on reducing scrap metal in the automotive industry. David graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2022 with an MEng and spent one year working at a church before re-joining the department. He is just beginning the second year of his PhD.

Abstract

Car parts are often made from sheet metal using deep drawing. This is a reliable and efficient process, but it has scrap rates of close to 50%. Over the past few years, the Use Less Group has been developing a less wasteful process called Folding-Shearing. This talk explains the Folding-Shearing process and recent developments, including a method to extend the process to a new class of geometries.
