Cybercrime and cybersecurity have taken centre stage in our lives due to technology adoption. Relevant public perceptions can stem from engrained views on security and crime, despite sometimes thinking of them as new. This paper is exploring public perceptions of cybercrime and cybersecurity through the lens of history. It draws parallels between early security (Victorian lockpicking competitions) and cybersecurity, historical and contemporary modes of advertising (cyber)security solutions, and burglars and cybercriminals, to understand modern day attitudes towards cybersecurity and cybercrime.
