If you have a question about this talk, please contact . The stable commutator length of an element g in a group G is a well studied invariant in geometric group theory. Many classes of negatively curved groups have a gap in stable commutator length. This can be seen as an algebraic thick-thin decomposition. In this talk I discuss new gap results for graph of groups. By applying JSJ decomposition we deduce that 3-manifolds have a gap in stable commutator length. This is joint work with Lvzhou Chen (University of Chicago).
