If you have a question about this talk, please contact J.W.Stevens. Decades of supply chain management learnings provide an opportunity for complex systems, such as healthcare, to understand, evaluate, and improve complicated and often inefficient healthcare delivery. We provide a primer on supply chain thinking in healthcare, with a focus on healthcare delivery, by following an approach that is customer-focused, systems-based, and strategically orientated, and that simultaneously considers clinical, operational, and financial dimensions. Our goal is to offer an understanding of how concepts and strategies in supply chain management can be applied and tailored to healthcare by considering the sector’s unique challenges and opportunities. We then discuss the main challenges of integrating healthcare services from a supply chain perspective and provide examples of how various supply chain strategies are, and can be, used in healthcare. In the second part of the talk, by drawing on examples from the NHS and the USA , we discuss the emerging paradigm-shift from fee-for-service to value-based healthcare. The objectives are (1) to understand which outcomes matter to patients and (2) to design cost-effective ways to deliver these outcomes. We will consider the opportunities and challenges of implementing a value-based approach and discuss how to operationalise these opportunities and overcome these challenges.
