In addition to playing fast and loose with terminology, the development of constitutive relations has in many instances strayed in a manner that goes against the basic philosophical underpinnings of Newtonian Mechanics. After discussing the faulty and misguided development of constitutive relations, I will discuss an approach that is not only in keeping with the basic philosophical basis of Newtonian Mechanics, that also leads to a much richer theory within the purview of which materials can be modeled.
