Partula snails have a history that has long been associated with the major developments in biology. This was largely eclipsed by the mass extinction of most Partula species in the 1990s, since when they have been emblematic of the biodiversity crisis and the issues of invertebrate conservation. The situation in French Polynesia was reappraised in August with a study of the new threats to the surviving species and a search for other survivors in little known parts of the islands. The results of this are presented for the first time.
