Colin Ward (1924-2010)through his many books and other publications became influential voice in encouraging new ways of thinking about childhood and education that considered the importance of environment in development, the significance of free-play and recognised children as capable agents in their own learning cultures. His contribution was wide and varied but his two key books on childhood, The Child in the City and The Child in the Country are most often cited. The Bulletin of Environmental Education which Ward co-edited with Tony Fyson is best remembered by teachers.
