The conveyor-like circulation of the Atlantic ocean (aka, the AMOC ) carries warm surface waters northward through the basin, thereby affecting regional and global climate. There have been several recent studies suggesting that the AMOC has weakened and some suggest that there are (indirect) warning signs of an impending “collapse”. In this talk I will explore: What do the latest instrumental data show? How do these observational records fit within the longer-term context provided by marine sediment core records spanning the industrial era? And can examples from the geological record help constrain how far we have travelled along the pathway to a collapse of the AMOC ?
