Quantum metrology with Bose Einstein condensates

Beating the classical precision limit is one of the key aspects of quantum metrology. The goal is the generation and characterization of useful quantum mechanical resources which allow surpassing the classical precision limits. Since the gain in precision is intimately connected to quantum entanglement in many particle systems these investigations are also interesting from the fundamental point of view. In this colloquium I will give an introduction to quantum metrology and discuss how Bose Einstein condensates can be used to generate entangled many particle states as well as explicitly using them for interferometry. I will also touch upon the recent development of using time reversal of non-linear dynamics to reach quantum enhanced precision and the generation of spatial multipartite entanglement
