This talk is part of the 11th series of webinars for Professional Development in the Arts.

Since last century, the uses of music in special education, approaches to music education, and the specific uses of music therapy in education have evolved offering new educational and therapeutic opportunities for people with disabilities and with special educational needs. Practice and research have increased in the last decades and evidence-based results showed that the application of music therapy in the field of special education has been effective in helping students with a wide range of disabilities in non-musical and musical areas. This conference presents an overview of the uses of music therapy in the field of Education based on theoretical and research findings of case studies that describe different approaches to the implementation of Music Therapy in Special Education.

Dr Patricia L. Sabbatella (PhD, EMTR Supervisor) is Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Cádiz (Spain) and Course Director of the Music Therapy Master Program. Educator, Researcher and Clinician in the field of Music Therapy and Music Education with special interest in Inclusive Music Education & Special Education; Musical Development & Music Therapy Assessment, and Music Therapy & Mental Health. Leader Researcher of the University Research Group HUM 794 : Music and Movement in Education and Therapy (UCA Andalusian Research Programme). She has published journal articles and book chapters in the fields of Music Education and Music Therapy, and has served on professional boards of the World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) and the European Music Therapy Confederation (EMTC).
