Combining atom chips with novel fiber-based microcavities gives unprecedented control over light-matter coupling at the single-atom, single-photon level. I will present experiments showing the collective coupling of a Bose-Einstein condensate to the cavity field and the optical detection of an atomic qubit without spontaneous emission. Future perspectives include the creation of multi-atom entangled states.
