Transposable elements, small mobile parts of our genomes, were at times considered junk DNA , selfish DNA or parasitic DNA . Today we know that their real effect in our genomes is more nuanced, and they contribute to shape our genomes in unexpected ways. In my talk I will review the history of their research, their current status in Genomics, and the open questions that still abound about them.
