Data-driven supply chains of interconnected systems and services are now a primary mechanism by which centralised (cloud-based) computing resources are distributed and a common architectural form for applications. They have also become a primary means by which major technologies companies seek to enclose and restructure social and economic life, extract value, and concentrate power. As a result, while generally invisible to application users, supply chains are now key infrastructures in information societies. This talk will explore some of the difficult governance and accountability questions this raises.
