The role of AI in decision-making about air pollution emission control decisions

Ambient fine particulate matter air pollution exposure is the leading environmental health risk factor, responsible for several million deaths per year globally. A very large number of sources contribute to this ambient air pollution, and decisions to control sources need to consider the tradeoffs between source control costs and health benefits. Here, we look at how health risks from air pollution are estimated and used to inform decisions about emission controls, with an example about vehicle emissions, and begin to explore what opportunities might exist for AI to improve decision-making about air pollution controls in the future.
