Chromosomal instability is a characteristic hallmark of cancer, providing part of the genomic variation that makes cancer so heterogeneous and hard to treat. Here, we introduce the notion of recent copy number aberrations – a way to measure ongoing chromosomal instability using single-cell whole-genome DNA sequencing. Ultimately, this will contribute to a better understanding of the fundamental mechanisms and processes underlying chromosomal instability, and has the potential to improve patient care in the future.
