Though tiny, photosynthetic cells have played an enormous role in the history of the Earth and its climate. Examples include producing atmospheric oxygen, carbon sequestration, and increasing biological complexity by symbiotic cohabitation with other species. By exploring simple cell models, constructed from the bottom-up, we can further understand how these cells evolved in a changing world and how we can use them to address modern climate concerns.
