Interactions between stratospheric ozone and climate change in the Arctic

In this talk, I will describe my work on interactions between stratospheric ozone and climate change. I will discuss a ‘Eurasia-North America dipole’ (ENAD) mode in the total column ozone (TCO) over the Northern Hemisphere in winter, which shows negative and positive TCO anomaly centres over Eurasia and North America, respectively. The positive trend of this mode explains an enhanced TCO decline over the Eurasian continent in the past three decades. It is closely related to the Arctic stratospheric polar vortex shift towards Eurasia since 1980, which is partly caused by the Arctic sea ice loss. I will discuss how Arctic stratospheric ozone depletion could exert a feedback impact on the Arctic sea ice loss through changing atmospheric radiative and dynamical processes.
