Ion traps are currently one of the most well-developed and promising technologies for implementing quantum information processing, though the challenges remain enormous. I will introduce the general ideas of ion trap QIP , and report on recent results at Oxford. These include two-qubit entangling gates, a memory qubit with long-lived coherence (T2 ~ one minute), qubit readout with high fidelity (99.985%), and progress towards scaling the system up using microfabricated trap arrays.
