What is Life?
The title ‘What is life?’ derives from a book written in 1944 by the physicist Erwin Schr¨odinger which controversially merges physics and biology in order to describe life processes. We want to ask both the sciences and humanities how the phenomenon of life, and human life in particular (but not exclusively) is transformed into understanding and representation in their disciplines. How is the gulf, in Kant’s sense, between actual life and rational understanding of life overcome, if at all? How can materialistic and subjective treatments of ‘life’ be reconciled? Finally, what are the consequences for the ethical human being of any changed conception of life?
