Proper characterization of the engineering properties and behavior of gravelly soils is critical for safe, economic design of civil works, such as dams, bridges, railways, and tunnels, since they are frequently constructed upon or through these materials. Characterization of gravelly soils is challenging given the relatively large particle sizes, which prohibits the use of most conventional in situ and laboratory testing techniques. This presentation will first present the broader context within which the behavior of gravelly soils are analyzed and then describe in detail recent advances in characterization techniques.
