In November, 1715, in an effort to rid itself of its under-librarian, the antiquary and Nonjuror Thomas Hearne, the Bodleian Library changed its locks. Drawing on Hearne’s account, this paper examines the politics surrounding the editing and publication of English historical manuscripts in the early eighteenth century, and the consequences for later readings of the English Reformation.
