Breakfast Networking: How SMEs can get accustomed to customs

Exporting is an increasingly important way of SMEs to reach potential and grow their business. Navigating different customs (as in customs and excise) around the world can be technically challenging, but it doesn’t have to be this way with the right support. This session is free to members and non-members.

This last breakfast networking session before the Summer break will provide an introduction to customs for those considering export for the first time. It will also be useful for those who would like to check that they are doing it ‘right’ or perhaps just want to swap experiences and discuss best practice with others.

Speakers and topics will be:

FedEx: John Stoten, Global Clearance Solution Specialist – Senior, FedEx Express EMEA  An introduction to customs – what a small business needs to know. FedEx will introduce the subject of customs and the importance of dealing with it properly by highlighting potential customs challenges UK businesses can face when exporting, providing advice on how to overcome these issues.

FedEx will talk through examples of unusual shipments to further illuminate and generate interest in this area as well as educating on the documents to be familiar with (commercial invoices, air way bills, etc), emphasising advice and resources available for businesses to better navigate customs procedures.

Case study – Horizon Discovery: Dr Charli Batley, Group Purchasing Manager Horizon Discovery has expanded rapidly in the last 5 years, both in terms of staff and markets. The company provides products and services to support research into personalised medicine and ships their products all over the world. They will be sharing some of their experiences at this session.

Santander: Richard Arnfield, London & SE Divisional International Director for SME Banking. Richard will cover some of the financial implications to consider when going through customs procedures. He will also give a short introduction to the Santander trade portal.
