While it is generally assumed that quantum mechanics accurately describes the whole of chemistry, materials science, biology and much of physics it is impossible to solve the equations of quantum mechanics exactly to prove this assertion. In this talk, Prof. Mike Payne will describe the techniques that have been developed that do allow us to use quantum mechanics to predict the behaviour of a vast range of systems and will explain why these approaches have been adopted by industry.
