The characteristics of networks ranging from biological, physical, to social systems allow for computational analysis to contribute data unattainable from examining individual components. However, the interdisciplinary and quantitative nature of network theory has yet to be exploited by public health initiatives, particularly interventions addressing parasitic diseases and uptake of preventative health behaviors. This talk will discuss the potential for social networks and the resulting social capital to provide insight into disease control. Results from preliminary work in former `blood-diamond’ areas of Sierra Leone/Liberia will be presented and obstacles faced for large-scale tractable social network surveys in rural poor areas will be discussed.

This talk is part of the Cambridge Networks Network (CNN) series.
