If you have a question about this talk, please contact Ann Waterman. Refreshments available from 16.40 n this seminar I will draw on a commissioned report produced by an international team and presented at ICME12 , in order to discuss findings, grounded on a literature review and a survey of university mathematics lecturers’ views, concerning the transition from secondary school to university mathematics. The seminar will be sample-based and its second part will focus on the particular issue of students’ first encounters with mathematical proof and the ways in which these encounters may influence transition. For the purposes of this second part I will draw on an ongoing study that examines students’ mathematical writing of proofs through the lenses of the Harel and Sowder taxonomy.
