We’re delighted to welcome Ana Botin, CEO of Santander UK to speak in Cambridge on the eve of Santander opening their new office here in the city. Ana Botín has a long track record in the financial industry, joining Banco Santander in 1988 after eight years with JP Morgan in New York. During this time, she led the establishment of Santander’s investment banking business as well as its franchises in Braziland Argentina, which today remain among the most profitable in the global network. In December 2010 she was appointed CEO of Santander UK plc, one Britain’s leading personal financial services companies and one of the largest providers of mortgages and savings in the UK. In 1999, Ms Botin left her executive duties at Santander and partnered with internet entrepreneurs in an IT consultancy firm which she grew and ultimately sold to Indra, the leading global technology company based in Spain. During this period she also set up a €220 million Private Equity Fund, Suala, which focused on investment in growth companies and produced significant returns for major institutional investors. From 2002 until moving to the UK in 2010 Ms Botin was Executive Chairman of Banesto. Under her leadership the bank improved its business mix, fostering the SME and Corporate segments, achieved top-ranked customer service, and was recognised as one of the five best companies to work at for seven years in a row in Spain. In that period, Banesto also financially outperformed its peers, thanks to its efficient business model, superior IT and strong risk management capabilities, and was recognised as the Best Bank in Spain for three consecutive years by the financial magazine Euromoney. Timings: The talk will last for about 30 minutes, followed by Q&A and light refreshments afterwards.
