In order to develop a properly historical comparison between Kant’s philosophical cosmopolitanism and Vattel’s law of nations, one must first work out how to historicise Kant’s metaphysics. This is the precondition for situating Kant’s cosmopolitanism as expressing the outlook or ‘stance’ of a particular kind of intellectual culture and faction, thereby enabling it to be situated alongside (not above) Vattel’s law of nations, the expression of a different kind of outlook and culture.
