We discuss the abstract problem of how to cache valuable material at a number of locations so that, if some of these are destroyed or pilfered, what remains is likely to be sufficient for survival. We briefly
describe the general mathematical formulation, but then adapt the model to the problem faced by scatter-hoarders who choose the location and depth of
the cache, subject to a limit on total digging. This is joint work with Nicky Clayton, Tom Lidbetter and Robbert Fokkink.
