What is a father’s role in reproduction and early parenthood?

In a field where the lens has largely focused on mother-child relationships, the importance of broadening reproduction discussions to incorporate the ‘male factor’ is clear.

In this term’s Forum, we aim to shine the spotlight on the reproductive contribution of the father beyond DNA and discuss what it means to be a father in a society where traditional understandings of fatherhood are changing.

Topics will span the father’s contribution before and after birth, including male contraception, paternal health during the pre-conception period and its impact on fertility and offspring health, the father’s journey through fertility treatment and pregnancy loss, and asking ‘what does it mean to be a father in today’s world?’ where biological, behavioural, and legal relationships can be complex.

Furthermore, a greater caregiving role for fathers might have social and financial implications for parental leave policies and the career progression dynamics of fathers returning to work.
