Henry Bradshaw (1831-1886), former Librarian of Cambridge University Library, is mainly remembered for his contributions to bibliographical scholarship. He was also, however, a prolific book collector with a life-long interest in Irish print, history and literature. This talk examines the Bradshaw collection and its development throughout the nineteenth century, exploring its importance in both a national and institutional context. It will trace the journey of many rare Irish books to Cambridge during this era – and illuminate the connections and crossovers in print culture between Ireland and England through Bradshaw’s library-building.
