We will discuss the results obtained from a series of laboratory experiments performed to investigate the behaviour of gravity currents in porous media of layered permeabilities. We will see how the flow patterns are considerably different from that develops in a homogeneous medium and that the mixing between the injected and ambient fluids is significantly higher. Finally, we will conclude by showing how such flows can still be modelled using reduced empirical correlations.
