An online tool is often cheaper than purchasing desktop software. A desktop software program that can meet the needs of an average user is priced between $150 and $500. Although there are many desktop software options that are cheaper, or even free, they are often not very good. Online solutions can be purchased for $5 to $20 per month, or they can be free. This is more affordable than purchasing desktop software for most users. Online tools are much quicker than downloading software. Software products from major vendors such as Adobe and Nitro can be large and slow to install. A web product is a great choice for users who only need basic PDF editing. Do you really want to wait 15 minutes for a product that is 1GB in size to be installed on your computer? An online solution can be used on any device and not just on one computer. An online PDF editor is more convenient than desktop software. You have full access to your files, which are usually stored in the cloud. Also, you can use an editing tool at any time. You can do your work as long as you have internet access. In recent years, online PDF tools have advanced a lot. There were not many web-based PDF tools even a few years back. The few that existed didn’t work or were filled with intrusive advertisements. There have been many new online PDF editors, such as WonderShare. These new online PDF editors are now more competitive than their desktop counterparts. Another interesting development is the rise of online PDF to Word converters (which solves many PDF editing headaches). Despite the popularity of online PDF tools, current industry conditions mean that web-based solutions won’t be able to solve all your needs. Desktop software products still have an advantage in certain areas. This is especially true for large enterprises. These drawbacks are listed below: Online PDF tools can’t be used to edit text. This is the biggest problem facing online editors right now and it is unlikely that this will be solved soon. Editing PDF text directly in a browser requires significant computing power. This won’t be possible for several years, at most. Rich media PDFs (e.g. Desktop software makes it much easier to create PDFs with rich media (e.g. video, surveys) and PDF forms. Online PDF editors are not sufficient to create complex PDFs with rich media or forms. Online tools are great for simple tasks such as Word to PDF conversion and Excel to PDF conversion. However, I have yet see an online solution that can create complex PDFs. Large companies don’t want their personal data stored online. My research has not led me to any online PDF tool APP which has adopted international data privacy standards in order to allow documents to be uploaded. Large organizations that handle sensitive data, such as legal contracts and financial information, require that their data be protected according to internationally recognized standards. This is an easy problem to solve. I expect online vendors will provide better data privacy in the future to help enterprise clients.
