Many sounds produced by non-human animals sound like music to human ears, but differ fundamentally from human music in meaning and function. This presentation will examine various forms of non-human animal “music”, to argue that music is not defined by sound alone, but rather by a uniquely human approach to social interaction and symbolic communication.
