The Fitzwilliam Museum has become a leading centre of research into medieval coin finds – hoards and single finds – which are an increasingly important resource for historical and archaeological studies. Coin finds can provide profound insights into medieval economic and political history not available from any other source. They are direct physical evidence of the wealth and commerce of medieval Englich society.

Martin Allen will describe some of the most important developments in this field in recent years and notable discoveries of coins in the Cambridge area.
