Research is viewed as a long term, high risk investment which even if successful has no guarantee of business adoption. Investment in a commercial environment is dominated by low risk/rapid return projects. Creativity and commerce are interdependent and inextricably linked. A good understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the commercial environment should motivate and direct research. Research should help direct, substantiate and inspire the future business direction. The relationship will be discussed and explored using case studies from BT over recent years.
