If you have a question about this talk, please contact Fiona Hughes. Seminar overview: Canary Wharf Crossrail station is the first station on the Crossrail cross-London railway project to be constructed and, at the time of construction, the only one let as a design-and-build contract with developer Canary Wharf Group. Early involvement of the developer in the project allowed significant optimisation of the station box design from the original Crossrail reference design scheme. Innovative thinking, local knowledge and willingness to break with the norm enabled the station to be delivered at 58% of the cost of the reference design. Construction activities started in late 2008 and 3.5 years later the station was handed over to Crossrail in March 2012, five months ahead of programme. In his talk, Hoe will describe the design and construction challenges faced by the project teams focusing on the geotechnical aspects of this project. Biography: After graduated from University of Aberdeen in 1990, Hoe joined Arup Geotechnics in September the same year. Over 23 years with Arup, he has managed and led the geotechnical design of many major infrastructure projects in the UK and overseas. These include Heathrow Airport, Crossrail, Barcelona Container Port, Wembley Stadium, Channel Tunnel Rail Link and various projects in Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore MRT and Malaysia LRT . Hoe has the unique skills in the design/management of geotechnical projects and the application of numerical methods for solving complex 2D and 3D geotechnical soil structure interaction problems. Hoe joined COWI UK Ltd in 2013 and in the last four years he has involved in several major infrastructure and development projects in the UK and overseas. These include the Mersey Gateway Bridge, Garden Bridge, Lower Thames Crossing, HS2 , Leicester Square Hotel and Montgomery Bridge in the UK, Copenhagen to Ringsted railway, Fehmen Link in Denmark, Constantine Viaduct in Algeria, Anji Khad Bridge in northern India and Shen Zhong Link in the Pearl River Estuary in China.
