If you have a question about this talk, please contact Thorsten Naab. The interstellar medium drives galaxy formation and outflows. Its multi-phase structure is set by gravitation, cooling and chemistry as well as “feedback”, mostly form massive stars. I will present results from recent simulations with a well resolved interstellar medium and discuss the impact of stellar winds, ionising radiation, and supernova explosions on setting the ISM structure and the initial driving of galactic outflows.
