Abstract: After reviewing some possible meanings of ‘socialism’, I will discuss its influence on China’s economic development during the three decades before 1978, the three decades after 1978, and the three decades that lie ahead. I will conclude with an overall assessment of the contribution of socialism to China’s past and likely future progress.
