Lady Margaret Lecture The topic of this lecture is the span of Charles Darwin’s career as a geologist from his education and service on H M .S. Beagle through the years following the voyage when he identified himself as a geologist and published extensively on the subject. The human as well as the scientific aspect of his career will be discussed, particularly the nature of his high ambition in the field and his creative response when his ambition seemed thwarted.
