A granular material forms a distinct and fascinating phase in physics: sand acts as a fluid as grains flow through your fingers, the fallen grains form a solid heap on the floor or may suspend in the wind like a gas. The continuous interaction between the different phases in granular flows creates a complicated material that cannot be characterized by simple fluid or solid mechanics.

In this talk, I will present cutting-edge experimental research done on granular flows in DAMTP . We will look at avalanches and granular size segregation, at different scales, with the help of table-top and laboratory experiments done in the GK Batchelor Laboratory.

This talk is part of the Physics and Chemistry of Solids Group series.
