What happens when you start an Empire on the banks of arguably the world’s most sacred river? When a river’s water is historically linked with ritual purity, eternal health and wellbeing and is part of a region’s daily routine how do you appropriate it to meet imperial and deeply commercial ambition?

This talk will explore colonial encounter in Calcutta and the continued attempts during the nineteenth century to interpret and change spiritual relationships with the Ganges.
