In somatic cells, recombination between the homologous pairs of chromosomes is rare, this preserving the genetic integrity of cells. In contrast, it is rather frequent but not randomly distributed during meiosis, allowing the production of recombinant gametes. I will present our recent advances to (i) target and modify meiotic recombination profiles in the yeast S. cerevisiae and (ii) generate recombinant yeast diploid cells upon reversion of meiosis, a powerful method that can be used to identify the QTL of complex traits, without going through sexual reproduction.
