L cell pharmacology advances the treatment of diabetes and gastrointestinal disorders Following food ingestion, digested nutrients engage a diverse panoply of specialized gut endocrine cells, initiating the secretion of dozens of enteroendocrine hormones. These peptide messengers coordinate diverse physiological processes encompassing gut motility, digestive enzyme secretion, regulation of mucosal epithelial integrity, nutrient absorption, and disposal. This lecture will review key insights from basic and clinical science, challenges, and future opportunities that derive from understanding the therapeutic potential of the enteroendocrine L cell.
