What factors explain the characteristic organization of structural connectivity in the cerebral cortex, and what are implications of this network topology for brain dynamics? I will give an update on our work, in which we study the relation of features such as existence, density or laminar patterns of corticocortical projections to other structural parameters, explore concepts of optimal network organization and simulate the impact of connectivity on network dynamics with the help of a simple excitable model.
