Why is it so difficult and expensive to develop new medicines against diseases like cancer? What is the likely impact of these problems on healthcare in developed and developing economies? I will examine some of the scientific and socioeconomic challenges facing efforts to develop safe, effective and affordable new medicines for major diseases.
