If you have a question about this talk, please contact Slawomir Tadeja. Abstract: Autonomous driving marks a transformative era in transportation, yet the challenge of developing systems that can adeptly navigate the unpredictable complexities of mixed traffic scenarios is significant. A key concern is the limited social and situational awareness, along with the inability to communicate both implicitly and explicitly with other road users, including pedestrians and human drivers, this talk discusses the complexities of human behavior modeling, including data-driven approaches and Virtual Reality (VR) studies as complementary methods. It highlights the challenges of integrating social context into AV decision-making and the limitations of the current model. The talk covers both fundamental and emerging approaches to modeling pedestrian-AV interactions and explores future directions for improving socially aware AVs. It concludes with a discussion of the broader implications of this research for the safety, trust, and acceptance of AVs in mixed-traffic environments.
