Call for Papers: Graduate Workshop on Ethnographic Approaches in Asian Heritage Studies Following the discussion during our Graduate Roundtable in November 2024, the Asia’s Archaeology and Heritage Group invites submissions for a workshop dedicated to exploring the application of ethnographic methods in heritage studies within Asian contexts. This workshop aims to examine how ethnographic approaches, inherently dynamic and interdisciplinary, can be effectively used in the study of heritage in Asia. We seek to address how human-centred research methods, such as interviews, participant observation, and oral history, can be adapted to navigate the complexities of engaging with people and communities in diverse contexts, and how these adaptations may lead to unique insights or outcomes. We welcome papers that engage with, but are not limited to, the following aspects: · Theoretical and methodological innovations in ethnographic approaches to heritage studies. · Case studies showcasing the application of ethnographic methods in Asian heritage contexts, particularly those focusing on social interactions and community engagement. · Challenges and adaptations in conducting ethnographic research within the unique social fabrics of Asian cultures. · The impact of social traditions and interaction norms on ethnographic research and how they shape the outcomes of heritage studies. This workshop aims to provide a platform for graduate students (Master’s and PhD levels) to discuss their application and reflection on human-centred research methods in Asian settings, fostering a deeper understanding of how these methods can be tailored to suit the diverse and rich social landscapes of the region. Submission Guidelines Please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words, along with a short biography, by 31st January. Submissions should be sent to jl2265@cam.ac.uk. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 4th February. Date and Venue The workshop will be held in Cambridge at the Downing Site on 17th February, from 1:00 to 3:30 pm, and will be in person only.
